Why Choose Healthy Choice for your Reiki Training?

There are many people teaching Reiki classes now. Some are highly qualified and may be just the right teacher for you and others may not have the right energy for your needs. So, the question is often asked about how to choose a Reiki teacher that is right for you. Here is a list of questions to ask any Reiki master who you are thinking about taking a class from.

  • How long have you been working with Reiki? What training have you had? How often do you teach? How do you personally use Reiki? What is your lineage?
  • Will this training initiate me into, or progress me within the Usui lineage? If not, then which lineage is it a part of?
  • What qualifications are required to take Reiki Training?
  • What do you cover in your classes? How many hours of class time is included? How much time is instructional, and how much is hands on practice?
  • What are the specific things I will be able to do after taking the training?
  • What are your fees, and will I receive a certificate and a manual?
  • Can I take notes and tape record the class?
  • How many symbols will I learn?
  • Is there a Reiki support group in my area or can you help me establish one?
  • Will you openly support me in being a successful Reiki practitioner or master?
  • Do you have a positive respectful attitude toward other Reiki practitioners and masters, regardless of lineage or affiliation?

Be aware of how you feel about their answers and if they are responding in a loving manner that is supportive and empowering. Listen to your heart and you will be guided to the right teacher.

Before getting to the details, I get a few questions from students asking me about various branches of Reiki. A few big names currently going around in the West are:

  • Usui Reiki / Usui Reiki Ryoho / Usui Shiki Reiki Ryoho
  • Jikiden Reiki
  • Seichem Reiki / Tera Mai Seichem Reiki / Tera Mai Reiki
  • Karuna Reiki / Karuna Ki
  • Violet Flame Reiki
  • Lightarian Reiki

This is not a complete list. In 2000 there was a staggering 65 branches of Reiki. And now, in 2022 there are likely over 1000 branches of Reiki. Each with its own ‘flavour’, but at the core they all have similar teachings.

Usui and Jikiden are root systems. They are pretty much the same thing. Usui indicates that it was developed by Usui san, the founder of Reiki as we know it in the West, and Jikiden is Japanese for “Traditional”. Jikiden Reiki was founded around 2007 by Tadao Yamaguchi and include a few traditional techniques that are not usually taught in the West (all these techniques and more are included in the Usui Reiki Ryoho course taught at Healthy Choice).

Tera Mai, Seichem and Tera Mai Seichim are a stand-alone systems developed in the early 1990’s in the West and it blends Usui Reiki (from Japan) with Ancient Egyptian principles. The word Seichem comes from the Ancient Egyptian word, Sekhem, which means “power” and the founder claims that the goddess Sekhmet (goddess of war, and also healing) passed the information and system on. Tera Mai is passed on to us through the Buddha and is also called Elemental Reiki, lending information from the Buddhist Bonn traditions.

Lightarian, Violet Flame and Karuna are “upgrades” to the root system of Reiki. These systems where developed in the West during the 1990’s and early 2000’s and the founders claim that their systems are more powerful that Usui Reiki.

When deciding to learn Reiki, I strongly advise students to look at the root systems first and then add on if they feel they want to explore further.
